How to Access the Lancaster County Registry

The Lancaster County SORT portal is the official tool for searching sex offenders currently registered in the county. It is operated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and draws from the statewide registry database. Searching by name, zip code, or address will return profiles of offenders registered to locations within Lancaster County.

Each profile includes the offender's current photograph, full legal name, date of birth, home address, and the offense that required registration. If the offender is required to report their place of employment or current school enrollment, that information may also appear. The registry is open to the public at no cost and does not require a login or account.

For a broader search that includes all 46 South Carolina counties, use the main SLED SORT statewide portal. This is especially useful if you are looking at areas that straddle the Lancaster-York or Lancaster-Chesterfield county lines.

Note: The SORT database reflects registrations that are currently active. An offender who has been legally removed from the registry will no longer appear in search results.

Registration Requirements and Timelines

All persons convicted of a qualifying sex offense who reside, work, or attend school in Lancaster County are required to register with the Sheriff's Office. Registration must happen within one business day of release from custody. Those who move to Lancaster County from another county in South Carolina have 10 days to complete a new registration locally.

Address changes within the county must be reported within three business days. Each offender is classified into one of three tiers that determines how often they must appear in person to verify their information. Tier I offenders verify once per year. Tier II offenders verify every six months. Tier III offenders must appear every 90 days for life, with no option for removal from the registry.

Failing to register or report a change on time is a criminal offense. A first violation can result in up to 90 days in jail. A second violation carries up to one year. A third offense is a felony with a potential five-year sentence. These penalties are set by state law under SC Code Title 23, Chapter 3.

Public Records Requests in Lancaster County

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office accepts public records requests through two channels. You can submit a request through the NextRequest online portal, which allows residents to file and track FOIA requests digitally. You can also complete a paper Freedom of Information Act Request Form and submit it directly to the office.

For records-related questions, you can reach the records division at 803-313-2103. South Carolina's FOIA statute, at SC Code Title 30, Chapter 4, governs how the office must respond to records requests and sets timelines for production.

The sex offender registry is publicly accessible through SORT without a formal records request. Other records like incident reports or investigation summaries require a separate FOIA request. The office will advise requesters on what records are available and any applicable fees for copying or staff time.

Note: Filing a FOIA request is different from searching the sex offender registry. Registry searches through SORT are always free and do not require any formal paperwork.
